{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation happened on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be authorized to just run across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is actively examining the situation
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the FIA
"On lap three, track officials were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch officials were canceled and a caution signal was shown in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired subsequent to that time"
