2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a host of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
